SPF 45

I'm not really a beach-going gal, though I'd love to be, if only for sarongs and straw hats, beach bags and pink cheeks. I attribute my lack of beachiness to the fact that I'm incredibly fair-skinned and also, the fact that sand has a tendency to find its way into my bikini bottoms.

I do love rocky beaches, however, like many of those in Maine, and I enjoy searching for things -- bits of bright sea glass, broken china, and heart-shaped stones. Which brings me to this: a tote is essential {even if it's not filled with tanning lotion and glossy magazines} for collecting and carrying. A market-type straw satchel is my favorite and always reminds me of the summers of my childhood, even though we never had a bag quite like {Mom, who did we know who had one? Why do I love them so?}.

While I was searching for the above totes, I came across a whole other breed of vintage straw handbags. These are less earthy, and more glamorous, beachy-holiday.

  1. I love them too.
P.S. I used SPF 70 (!) on my Hawaii vacation and was very impressed with the results. As one pale girl to another.

  3. Bring an umbrella. Books are more enjoyable in a lounge chair.
I hate the sand too but as long as it's only on my feet I can deal with it.

  4. Nice! You need to go to Nice, France. I'm sure there are other rock beaches there, but I happened to spend a few days on the rocks in Nice. Aaahhhh.

I have a package that is waiting to be opened... My hubby just casually mentioned it to me. Going to go check it out now!

  5. Rachel: Wow! I didn't know they made 70! I need to be a bit more vigilant about wearing sunscreen ...

Screamish {I supposed I could call you by your name, but I'm not sure you want it out there}: Burns are the worst. Steaming skin for a week or so. Aloe, my friend. And cool baths.

Kittylou: You're totally right. Hence the term "beach reads" :)

Erin: I need to go to Europe, period! I've never been ... can you imagine that?! Nice is top on my list :)

  6. I love the beach! Nothing really compares to Lake Michigan, though. So, I'm stuck over here with ponds that people call lakes. There's a really great one that we go to, though.

Just because I care about you, go to the Environmental Working Group's website and look up sunscreen. Normal (chemical) sunscreen actually has chemicals in it that, while the block the sun, they can actually cause cancer. Eek! So, what's the point! I always use mineral sunscreen, which has, yup, minerals that physically block out the sun. It's a little harder to rub in, but no cancer.

Alba and Jason are my favorite brands :)
