Journal, Anyone?

So, I have a notebook obsession. I know I'm not alone. As I start my Saturday of {I hope} productivity, I thought I'd share with you some of the notebooks that have made the cut in the past {because, you know, with an obsession, it's all about hoarding ... some notebooks feel too pretty to write in and remain in the cupboard, untouched}. The five notebooks below are ones that have freed me -- have allowed my handwriting to grow loose and occasionally illegible, my sentence fragments to linger unfinished, and my best ideas to march forth onto the page.

Do you have a preferred notebook? Do you buy the same one again and again? Lined or unlined? Hard cover or soft? Give me the details.

  1. I actually did a post on a notebook that inspired me... This particular one has thick, unlined pages that I can scrawl out ideas in words and/or drawings, with just the right writing utensil, of course.

  2. I have a few notebooks that I just keep blank because I like the way they look and I don't know what deserves to be written on the pages so I just keep them in perfect condition.
I like moleskins. Lined, grid or plain. I love them all.

  3. I have a thick journal with one of those covers that naturally changes color...it's fun to touch and look at. it has pretty script writing all over the front (drooling here).
another one I use is a one-subject note book held together with duct tape. I find myself being more honest with that one for some reason.

  4. oh my gosh--I'm a notebook whore! I mean, really...the amount of money I waste on them. Each one holds the possibility of changing my life, or so I think--this one will make me finally get my expenses in order, or this one will let me keep track of what i eat (they always fail, or rather I, not them, fail). But I love them all--lately i've gotten a few from anthro. i try to keep them neat and pristine, but they always end up looking a little haggard and i like that about myself. i love your notebooks above and i love the way this post is written.

side note: i'm a terrible nyc tour guide. really--i've had two friends visit me as of late and i failed terribly.
and next: and you don't have to answer this, but do you go to UVA? my brother went there and I think Charlottesville is just about the most beautiful place in all the world. when i have more money than God I'm gonna own an old colonial in the surrounding country (out by where you would go to Foxfields).

  6. Meg: Yes, I love when they get a little beat-up. I find that I sometimes censor myself if the notebook is too pretty, though. I'd like to work on that. And yup, I'm finishing up graduate school at UVA. I'm wild about Charlottesville -- it's the loveliest place I've ever lived. It would be amazing to own a home here.

  7. What a great post. I have a favorite notebook that has blank pages and the front cover is made of faux lilac ostrich skin! Sounds bizaree but it is really pretty. My favorite magazine cutout of some geishas is pasted in the front lining and I glue in magazine articles and copy quotes, etc in it. Its my old school blog! I need to check out Charlottesville

  8. Clare: Whoops! It looks like my computer ate one of your comments! My sincere apologies! Your journal sounds lovely -- I had an orange one made of faux snake skin, and I loved scratching my nails against it :) And you're right, journals are old-school blogs, aren't they?

  9. Boo! I used to have a journal when I was 14-16. Pink, with a vintage-like watercolor print on it and a pink lock. When I read it, I'm so embarrassed :)) But my last notes were about the beginning of my relationship with my boyfriend (to be read: how he tried to catch my attention and how I tried convince myself that I didn't feel anything about him :p ). Then, at 19-20, when I finally realised that I actually felt something, but I didn't have the courage to tell him, I started writing him all my thoughts on a simple spring notebook. I gave it to him at our 1st year anniversary :D. I'm still writing to my sweetheart, although there isn't much left to write when we talk about everything. This notebook is lovely. I bought it from Siena, Italy, last Summer. It looks like the smallest one, except for the paper that covers it (mine is cream and has some French words written on it and some roses). The shop is exactly this one: Legatoria Koine. http://www.legatoriakoine.it/immagini/large/quadernoni.jpg

  10. Dia: That's adorable ... what a wonderful thing to have recorded so long ago. I bet your boyfriend was so touched and flattered that you wrote him before you were a couple. Your Italian notebook is beautiful (I looked at the site you included), and quite worthy of holding all of your lovely thoughts. Is it a journal of your own, or will you gift your boyfriend with it?

  11. In fact it was quite a strategic move to give him the notebook :)) I don't express very well my feelings in spoken words. But when I write, it's different. I realised that he didn't really know what he meant to me. I felt that we were slowly drawing away. When I gave him the notebook, he said that he fell in love again and it was like passing to a new stage. I gather all sorts of things: wrapping from the candies he gives to me, tags from the cloths that we buy together, train tickets, the napkins on which he writes cute notes, and I put them all in the notebook. At our first date, in May, all the black locust trees were in bloom. In July he had to leave the town for a while. I missed him so much and I was so excited when I found in a black locust bush a blooming fascicle (in July!). I don't belive in signs, but it was like a smile sent to me. I still have it...in the notebook :D It helps me appreciate every little thing that has a connection to us. And yes, I'll give him this notebook too. Hopefully in the week before our wedding day.
P.S. - I've forgotten to say that the notebook has also a cute pen and a tiny bottle of sepia ink. http://www.legatoriakoine.it/immagini/large/set_03.jpg

  12. Oh Dia! That's so beautiful! How incredibly thoughtful and loving. He is a lucky guy :) and, it seems, you are a lucky girl :) I don't know you in a conventional way, but I am so happy for you.
