For my birthday yesterday, Mr. Original and I went to my favorite junk shop about twenty miles north of town to scout around for old treasures. I walked away with a few old cigar boxes {from the 1920s and 30s!}, thinking they would be good containers for future love note kits ... but, I might love them too much to part with them! I do not smoke, and I don't like cigarette or cigar advertisements, but something about the ornate designs and bold graphics on these boxes completely charms me.
When I was little I had a stack of cigar boxes that held my very special treasures - you know, like the dorky clothing I would make for my model horses. That kind of stuff.
Happy Birthday! What special little boxes to hold treasures. Perhaps you should keep your jewelry inside so you can leave them out on your counters and use them on a daily basis!
Rachel: Ha ha, yes, I'm pretty sure I also made my My Little Ponies wear clothing. Otherwise, they'd have been naked, right?! And hey, if I had to wear pants, so did they.
Emily: Thanks so much! And good idea -- I was just musing over what I should fill them with now that I've decided to keep them. Jewelry is the ticket!
Happy happy birthday, darling girl! I'm so sorry that I missed the actual day. It sounds as though you had a wonderful time. Cigar boxes remind me of my childhood, when I hoarded my allowance in a booby trapped cigar box and wrote IOUs for my brothers.
P: Aw, girl, don't be sorry! I was sneaky about it, not even posting on the actual day {I'm not big into my birthday, know what I mean?}. You and Rachel were cool kids for having cigar box hiding spots back in the day. I hoarded my allowance in an envelope -- bah!
Oh, I love them too. And that they are old, makes them even better!
My hubby used to work in a mall in college, right next to a cigar shop. They'd give him empty boxes, so we have several (not old though). I keep my office supplies in them: rubber bands, paper clips, sticky notes, etc. They are so bright and pretty.
Jeska: I think I might also use one for crafty supplies ... and maybe small secrets.
Erin: I almost bought a bunch of newer ones, because they were just as pretty, but I could figure out how to scrape off the Surgeon General's warning! Maybe some Goo Gone ... ?
