...

I am drinking a glass of orange juice with a bit of lemon-lime seltzer thrown in for good measure. I wish I had chocolate somewhere in the cupboard. Gosh, I wish I had chocolate.

I need to be honest with you, dear readers. I'm thinking about closing this cupboard for a while. I don't know how long. I don't know if I'll reopen it and it will look and be different. Or if I'll close the doors for good and just work on it privately. Or if I'll jump ship altogether and start weaving baskets out of dental floss. Maybe a little break is all I need. I don't yet know. I really don't. I'm not sure this space is what I want it to be. I'm not sure it's what I envisioned {and I'm not sure it should be, necessarily}, and I think I've lost sight of something that felt urgent back in January, when I began. I've been reflecting on this for some time now, and reclaiming some privacy just feels like something I need and want to do. But I am incredibly sad, thinking of losing my connection to all of you, my kindred sparks around the world.

I am so sorry to disappoint. You have all been wonderful to me, really warm and really encouraging and really wonderful. Funny to think of loving people I've never actually met, but I do: I love you all. Please, bear with me while I figure this out.

I will be in touch, in some form or another.

I hope you can feel my giant hug.

  1. hmm, i've been hearing a lot of this lately; about people closing their blogs or taking a break. i think we've put too much pressure on ourselves to be amazing every day with fresh, inspiring posts...and it just doesn't always happen. perhaps just take a few days off and post when you feel like it...we'll be here!

  2. Dear Helen, I'm so sorry you feel this way. The Museum Cupboard is my daily delight and I'm sure it's the case of many others. You've invested so much time and love in it. But if you do feel the need to take a break, I really understand. But maybe from time to time you'll find interesting things you'd like to share with us, so keep it open, even if you won't post regularly. And if you don't like how it turned out...why not start another blog, keeping this one open too? Just my humble suggestions :)
I really hope we'll keep in touch.
    Love,
    Diana

  3. I went through this too, Helen, several times, but my blog always called me back. I did realize after taking some time off that I needed to stop forcing myself to post. So now I only post if I'm really feeling it. If that means I go a week or even a month with no posts, so be it. I've probably lost a few frustrated readers along the way, but I'm much happier with my space now. Best of luck to you as you sort it out. In the meantime, I'll keep you in my Google Reader and hope for your return : ).

  4. Helen, do you remember that I deleted my blog in frustration a few months ago? I came back with the lilacgrove and promised myself not to put any stress on myself in regards to how often I post, what goes into it, etc. Now when I take a blog break I ask a guest blogger to come over. I am glad that you are taking a break but hope that it is not a permanent one. I will miss you.

  5. My dear, take a break if you need it - you are the most important thing, and the blog should be an outlet, not a drain. We'll miss you if you decide to go, though!

  7. needing a break is understandable. i agree that posting every day can become a bit tiresome. that's why i get so lazy! people change and so do activities (like blogging), so maybe your blog will evolve if it feels like something you want to do.

i go for long periods of not signing in to blogger, but when i do, i still love looking at your pictures and the little moments you share. i will definitely still read if you decide to come back!

  12. Hug! Do what you need to do and what feels right. Please do keep in touch and take care of yourself and be happy and let us know when/if the cupboard is reopened. I admire you for doing what you feel like you need to do.

  13. It looks as if all of us are saying the same thing...we love the way you string words and images together...we see you as a creative force that tickles our aesthetic, we'll miss your 'take' on things, but we all know that joy must remain present. Whatever you have to do to nurture your joy, go ahead and do...you'll probably not know the extent to which you've already inspired others, but for this reader you will continue to bring inspiration, even if not web-present!

  14. I would understand if you were leaving for the weaving of dental floss into baskets. For that, leave everything!

  20. Whatever you decide to do, I'll understand. Blog fatigue is inevitable, so is blog pressure sometimes.
